- Cuno Amiet studia alla Akademie der Bildenden Künste di Monaco e all’Académie Julian a Parigi, dove negli stessi anni si forma anche Giovanni Giacometti, con cui instaura una forte amicizia. Ispirato dalla corrente divisionista, lascia presto la pittura accademica per dedicarsi allo studio del colore come mezzo espressivo prediletto. Al suo ritorno in Svizzera, nel 1893, incontra Hodler, con cui dà vita al movimento Jugendstil. Nel 1898 sposa Anna Luder e si stabilisce a Oschwand, nel Catone Berna. Su suggerimento del pittore tedesco Erich Heckel, nel 1906 entra a far parte del gruppo espressionista Die Brücke. Un incendio al Glaspalast di Monaco nel 1931 distrugge tutte le 50 opere esposte dall’artista, ma la sua produzione rimane numerosa e, oltre alla pittura, l’opera di Amiet comprende anche acquerelli, opere su carta e sculture.
Il dipinto in collezione raffigura l’autoritratto dell’artista con la moglie Anna, un anno dopo il loro matrimonio. Il soggetto, di carattere estremamente personale, può essere letto come una commemorazione dell’evento, caratterizzato da toni vivaci e da intimità, che sottolineano l’unità della coppia. I gesti fra i due coniugi – Amiet che cinge la vita di Anna, che a sua volta lo guarda in modo affettuoso – rinforzano la composizione circolare dell’opera. Alla scena è reso partecipe anche lo spettatore esterno, al quale l’artista rivolge uno sguardo diretto.
Cuno Amiet studied at Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich and the Académie Julian in Paris, where Giovanni Giacometti was also a student at the time, and the two artists became close friends. Inspired by Divisionism, he soon abandoned academic painting to focus on the study of colour as his preferred means of expression. Upon his return to Switzerland in 1893, he met Hodler with whom he founded the Jugendstil movement. In 1898, he married Anna Luder and settled in Oschwand, in the Canton of Berne. He accepted Erich Heckel’s invitation to join the Die Brücke group of Expressionist artists in 1906. Unfortunately, the 1931 fire at the Glaspalast in Munich destroyed all 50 of Amiet’s works on display. Nonetheless, his artistic production remained prolific and, in addition to painting, his oeuvre includes watercolours, works on paper and sculptures.
The painting is Amiet’s self-portrait with his wife Anna, a year after their wedding. This highly personal subject can be interpreted as a commemoration of the event, and both the bright colours and the intimacy between the two figures underscore the couple’s unity. The spouses’ gestures – the husband’s arm around his wife’s waist and the wife looking affectionately at him in return – reinforce the circular composition of the work, with Amiet’s direct gaze pulling the viewer into the scene.
